Sarnath
Sarnath –
Located near the city of Varanasi, Sarnath is one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites. It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon (known as the Dharmachakra Pravartan) to his five disciples after attaining enlightenment. Because of this, Sarnath is considered one of the four major holy sites in Buddhism.
-
Dharmachakra Pravartan: Here, Buddha taught the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, laying the foundation of Buddhism.
-
Dhamek Stupa: This stupa marks the exact spot where Buddha gave his first sermon.
-
Ashoka Pillar: Emperor Ashoka erected a pillar here topped with a sculpture of four lions, which was later adopted as the National Emblem of India.
-
Buddhist Monasteries and Temples: Sarnath is home to several temples and monasteries built by Buddhist communities from different countries.
Sarnath holds immense importance not only for Buddhists but also for those interested in history, art, and culture.
